The 3.40-metre-high monument made of corton steel was erected 2018 in memory of the 48 and 4 Jewish children and staff members, respectively, who stayed at the Berg Foundation in Laren and were murdered during the Holocaust.
This home was founded in 1911 by a Jewish entrepreneur, Albert (Sally) Berg, to shelter and provide a home for Jewish children who had been orphaned or whose parents were unable (or no longer able) to care for them.
After the German invasion, life became increasingly difficult for the children. The then director Jan Reitsema did everything he could to keep as many children as possible out of the hands of the Nazis. Because of his efforts, more than half of the 110 children survived the war.
The monument was initiative of Laren's Ineke Hilhorst. Coinciding with the unveiling, the book 'The Battle of the Mountain Foundation' was also published, written by Hilhorst herself, historian Teun Koetsier and Laren mayor Elbert Roest. The book tells the story of the Berg Foundation.
