Memorial Deportees Dronero

On the facade of the town hall hangs a marble slab with black-colored engravings, placed in memory of the citizens of Dronero who were deported to Germany, where they died during the Second World War.

On the night of December 30 to 31, '43, some partisans killed Oreste Millone, pharmacist and secretary of the Dronero fascio Oreste Millone, and his partner, Anna Albenga.
Two days later, the SS hit back hard: they surrounded the town of Dronero with 400 men and two armored cars, they set fire to the Piedmontese town and killed eight hostages who had been picked up randomly on the streets of the town.
Fourteen other civilians were arrested, five of whom were deported to Mauthausen: None of the five would return alive from the Austrian concentration camp.

The village of Dronero was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit for its contribution to the liberation struggle and for the blood shed during the terrible retaliation.
