War Memorial Mesnil-St.Blaise

The war memorial commemorates the soldiers, executed and combatants of both world wars.

There is also a memorial plaque on the side for Julia Nicaise-Pierre, a resistance fighter from the Second World War.
Julia Nicaise lived in Mesnil-Saint-Blaise in 1940-45. She was a member of the resistance in the intelligence and action services. She actively helped blow up bridges.
She made life difficult for the armed forces of the Nazi regime.
Henriëtte Schlachter was just a little girl of ten years old at the time of the war.
Her parents lived in Brussels, they placed their daughter in the Famenne as a precaution.
Under the wing of Julia, a woman she would later nickname "Godmother", the little Jewish child escaped the hands of the Germans.
In 2017, Julia Nicaise-Pierre finally got the honor she deserved. She was recognized as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem, the International Institute for the Remembrance of the Shoah.
