Memorial Recce Squadron 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragon Guards

On the wall of a converted farmhouse hangs a plaque commemorating four members of the Recci (Reconnaissance) squadron of the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragon Guards who were killed or wounded in this area.

The plaque contains a number of plaques with the logo of the Inniskilling Dragon Guards and the names of the soldiers concerned:

Sergt. Ginty Gilliland ( Wounded)
Trp. G.E. Wooley (Wounded)
L Cpl. A.J. Price (Died)
Trp. J.J. Ward (Wounded)

and the text:
Recce Squadron
5th Royal Inniskilling Dragon Guards
1945 Montfort 2000

They were probably carrying out a reconnaissance mission during the heavy fighting in and around Montfort between 21 and 24 January 1945 as part of "Operation Blackcock", the cleansing of the area between the Maas and Roer rivers.

It is not known why the plaque was attached to this very spot and what exactly happened. Lance Corporal Anthony John Price's official date of death is 4 February 1945 and is buried at Egham Thorpe Cemetery in GB.
