Sanatorium De Hooge Riet

On September 1 In 1944, the sanatorium De Hooge Riet (as well as the villas Hoogstede, Rustoord and Ruimzicht) was evacuated on the orders of the German Wehrmacht. The sanatorium had to become a 'Krieglazarett'. Large red crosses were placed on the roof (this was to provide protection against air raids), and the patients were distributed among the other pavilions at Veldwijk. In the basement there are (still) several bomb-proof cellars. After the war, in June 1945, part of De Hooge Riet could be put back into use. And there was virtually no damage. On the contrary: it turned out that the Germans even added a kitchen. In the same style and stone type.
