Pavilion 2 's-Heerenloo

From October 1944 until the liberation, Pavilion 2 was a base for people in hiding who were looking for a safe haven. An ingenious shelter had been set up by Gerrit Riemer and Piet van Vliet, called 'De Spookzolder'. The attic of the pavilion consisted of a wide corridor with doors on one side that gave access to the nurses' rooms. The hallway ended at a blank wall that seemed to be the end of the building. Behind that wall, however, was a room that was accessible via a secret door in the last room. The secret room contained beds for the people in hiding. They could also park their bicycles here, because as soon as they were outside the Germans would immediately become suspicious. When the people in hiding were in the room, the nurse in the last room hung a curtain in front of the secret entrance door, placed a coat rack in front of the curtain and pushed her bed against the curtain.
