Memorial Vriescheloo

On the wall of the village hall 't Ganzenrust hangs a memorial plaque for 3 fellow villagers who were killed in World War II.

Rudolf Braaf and Sara Nathan married on 18 November 1908 in Winschoten and had 2 children, one of whom survived the war. Daughter Silvia Edith Braaf, born 16 January 1916 in Winschoten was killed in Auschwitz on 16 February 1943. Rudolf was a cattle trader and they lived at 14 Emmastraat in Winschoten.

The couple was in hiding with Hendrik Kuiper on Meidoornweg (formerly L 110 Vriescheloo). On 27 June 1944, Hendrik Kuiper and Rudolf and Sara Braaf were arrested.

Rudolf and Sara were transferred to camp Westerbork on 1 July 1944. They too did not escape the transport lists and on 3 September 1944 they were deported to Auschwitz, where they were killed on 6 September 1944.

Hendrik was also arrested. Via Camp Amersfoort and Camp Vught, he was transported to Sachenhausen concentration camp, where he died on 29 January 1945. He was only 59 years old.
