This memorial commemorates Lazar Jauković. He was an engineer involved in the construction of the Durđevića Tara bridge, the -at the time- largest concrete road bridge in the World. Construction began in 1937 and the bridge was completed in 1940.
In April 1941, Montenegro, as part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, was conquered by German and Italian troops and became an Italian protectorate.
In July 1941, the Montegrines rebelled against the Italian occupation forces. To slow down Italian troop movements, the partisans asked Lazar Jauković to blow up part of the bridge. This succeeded but he was caught by the Italians and executed on the bridge on 2 August 1942.
