Memorial Loyers

A monument was erected in Loyers in front of the church in 2014 in memory of Marie Hartz.
On August 24, 1914, the Germans invaded Loyers. All the men of the village were captured and taken to the church where they were imprisoned.
A German officer gave the order to form a firing squad to shoot all these men. Marie Hartz, a resident of the village who spoke German, without hesitation and at the risk of her own life, went to the German officer and asked to save the lives of all those men.
The German officer granted Mrs. Hartz's request and released the prisoners.

As a thank you, a square was named after her on which this memorial was later placed.
"August 24, 1914, Madame
Marie Hartz saved,
at the risk of her life,
men from Loyers,
threatened by a Saxon firing squad.
May her heroic attitude
always remain etched in our memories"
