Heusden survived the liberation relatively unscathed. In the autumn of 1944, many English soldiers were housed there. During a large-scale German counterattack in October, the Heusden countryside was confronted with many series of war violence. There were also civilian casualties.
Furthermore, several Heusden residents lost their lives due to exploding mines.
The names of the local victims are honored on a war memorial in front of the St. Antonius Church on Vorstermansplein.
The nearby botanical garden is good for a pleasant break.
