Memorial Engis

On the municipal public elementary school (founded 1880) of the village of Engis is a memorial plaque in honor of the fallen 16 soldiers originating from, or living in the village during the 1st World War. (The school was recently repainted, it is no longer in the typical local Meuse Renaissance style. Red bricks with bluestone frames, which also makes the stele less prominent).

BAMPS Henri, age 26, soldier with the 6th Engineer Regiment, killed in action, April 25th 1915 at Noordschote (West Flanders). Buried at the Westvleteren Military Cemetery, grave 314.

CHARPENTIER Walther, age 26, soldier with the artillery at one of the fortifications of 'la Position Fortifiée de Liège', died of illness* November 13th, 1918 at Montana, Switzerland (2 days after the armistice !), reburied after the war at the municipal cemetery at Engis.

COLSOUL Julien, age 25, soldier with the 12th Line Regiment, died of influenza* at Tours (France) October 20th, 2018.

CORBIER Henri, age 20, soldier with the artillery at one of the fortifications of 'la Position Fortifiée de Liège', died while a prisoner of war in Germany on June 29th, 2018, reburied at the Leopoldsburg Military Cemetery, grave A-24.

DELAITE Fernand, age 24, soldier with the 14th Line Regiment, died of illness* on March 29th, 1918 in the hospital of Lyon (F), buried in the French Military Cemetery La Doua of Villeurbanne at Lyon.

GODIN Marcel, age 23, corporal with the 18th Line Regiment (war volunteer), killed in action on October 16th, 1918 at Torhout (West Flanders), reburied after hte war at the Engis municipal cemetery.

HUBERT Marcel, age 20, soldier with the 14th Line Regiment, killed in action, September 12th, 1914 in Boortmeerbeek (Flemish Brabant), reburied after the war at the municipal cemetery of Engis.

LEMAIRE Victor, age 25, soldier with the 2nd Carabiniers regiment, killed in action October 14th, 1918 at Rumbeke (West Flanders), buried at the Houthulst Military Cemetery, grave A1-1100.

LEPINNE Maurice, age 29, soldier with the 17th artillery regiment, killed in action October 18th, 1918 at Ruddervoorde (West Flanders).

LOMBA Edouard, age 25, corporal with the 24th Line Regiment, killed in action September 28th, 1918 in the woods of Merken-Houthulst (West Flanders), buried at the Houthulst Military Cemetery, grave N1-1237.

MATHIEU Fernand, age 22, soldier with the 2nd Carbiniers regiment, killed in action on September 12th, 1914 at Tildonk (Flemish Brabant), reburied after te war at the Engis cemetery.

PAQUET Pierre, age 35, soldier with the 3rd Engineer Regiment, died in an ambulance at Calais (France) on December 25, 1914 from illness. He is buried in the Military Cemetery of Calais, grave 275.

SAUVAGE Raoul, age 20, corporal with the 14th Line Regiment, killed in action September 12th, 1914 at Haacht (Flemish Brabant). He is still listed as missing, his body was never recovered.

SAUVENAY Joseph, age 33, soldier with the 8th artillery regiment, died as a result of illness on September 16th, 1915 in the sanatorium of Harderwijk (Netherlands), buried at the Military Field of Honor at Oostergaarde cemetery, grave A-5-17.

These fallen are also honored on the monument opposite the town hall in Engis.

* possibly died as a result of the pandemic Spanish flu prevalent at the time.
