Memorial Plaque Friedrich Wilhelm Böse Bridge

This bridge linking the districts of Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding was named after communist resistance fighter Friedrich Wilhelm Böse in 1948. As active members of the KPD, he-and his wife-were arrested as early as 1934 and sentenced to prison. After being betrayed, he was arrested again in 1942 and, after spending time in several concentration camps, was executed in Brandenburg-Görden prison on 21 June 1944.

The bridge also formed an border post between East and West Berlin. History was made here on 9 November 1989 by being the first border post to open after which tens of thousands of East Berliners crossed the border to the West that evening.
