The McLean House is located in Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. The house was owned by Wilmer McLean and his wife Virginia towards the end of the Civil War. The house served as the site of the surrender conference for General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army, hosted by Union General Ulysses S. Grant, on April 9, 1865, after a nearby battle.
The farmhouse represents the historic architectural style in Piedmont, Virginia of the mid-nineteenth century. The current building is a reconstructed form of the original using the original materials.
