During 1942, the construction of four new-and larger-gas chambers with associated changing rooms and crematoria began in Auschwitz-Birkenau. These were the two largest (2 and 3) and two smaller ones (4, and 5). When commissioned in june 1943, the crematorium of this gas chamber 5 had a capacity of 768 bodies per day. With this number, it is easy to draw the conclusion that within this room, several hundred thousand people were killed under deceptive-and horrific-circumstances.
This gas chamber and crematorium were the only ones to function until the end. They were blown up by the SS only just before the liberation of the camp in an attempt to erase the traces of their crimes as much as possible.
In the immediate vicinity of this site, there are four black granite stones reminding, in Hebrew, Roma, English and Polish, that at this site lie the ashes of the men, women and children who became victims of the Nazi genocide."
