This moment commemorates the guides who risked their lives to guide refugees across the Pyrenees during World War II. The monument stands near a mountain cottage, "La Cabane des Evades" where, on 6 February 1944, a Nazi patrol arrested and for the most part killed a large group of refugees.
It consists of a granite stele with an engraved text: The text reads:
"LA CABANE DES EVADES
HOMMAGE
AUX PASSEURS FRANCAIS QUI ONT QUIDE
DE NOMBREUX EVADES DE TOUTE NATIONALITE
PAR CES EVADES DE GUERRE QUI FURENT
ARRETES ET DEPORTES LE 6 FEVRIER 1944
A CEUX QUI NE SONT JAMAIS REVENUS"
Translation:
"HONOUR
TO THE FRENCH SMUGGLERS WHO HELPED
MANY ESCAPEES OF ALL NATIONALITIES
FOR THESE WAR ESCAPEES WHO WERE
ARRESTED AND DEPORTED ON 6 FEBRUARY 1944
TO THOSE WHO NEVER RETURNED".
