Memorial for Dutch soldiers.
The 'Monument for Dutch Soldiers' in Someren was erected in memory of the Dutch soldiers who fell in the area of Sluis 11 in May 1940, and of all residents of Someren and Asten who served in a military context between May 1940 and September 1944. died and to all local residents who died as soldiers during the police actions in the former Dutch East Indies.
As early as 1940, residents of Asten and Someren formed a committee to erect a memorial for the fallen soldiers at lock 11. Architect P. Gadiot from Breda designed a stone niche for a statue by artist Charles Grips, who was a year earlier he also made the statue of the Lady Chapel in Someren-Heide. However, the occupying forces made the establishment impossible.
The committee resumed its work a few months after the liberation.
The monument was consecrated on May 15, 1949 by Chief Army Chaplain Monsignor Van Straelen.
