This earthen battery was constructed in 1845 on the northwest slope of the Lingedijk south of Asperen. The battery blocked the Linge access. In 1903 the earthwork was provided with a bombproof concrete shelter. This is an early example of a concrete shelter near an earthen intermediate battery.
The battery was part of the Tussenstelling Zuider Lingedijk. This mainly consists of small concrete works from the 20th century. The Nieuwe Zuider Lingedijk was the main defense line of the wide inundable area between the Linge and the Waal. Together with the Fort at Asperen, the arsenal at Asperen, the Fort at Vuren and the Fort at the Nieuwe Steeg, these concrete and other works formed the support of the main defense line behind the inundation zone in the then Asperense Polder and the Heukelemse Veld.
The gun emplacement was formed by a plateau against the dike with four open earthen gun emplacements, separated by crossbeams, behind an earthen parapet, also located above the crown level of the dike. It is completely covered with grass and is complementary to the adjacent shell-free, concrete shelter. The intermediate battery is located slightly diagonally to the dike crest and is therefore explicitly aimed at the bend in the Linge southwest of Acquoy.
The battery is now a national monument.
