This cell held Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip (1894-1918), who was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Oct. 28, 1914, for the assassination of Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The assassination marked the start of the Great War.
The Theresienstadt fortress had been used as a prison since the second half of the 19th century. During World War I, it functioned as a prisoner of war camp. Princip was kept in isolation and was not allowed to receive visitors. He suffered from TB and died on April 28, 1918, in a hospital near the prison.
