The Cemetery in Beltrum contains the Dutch War Grave of:
Johannes Hermanus Bernardus ten Barge 1903-1945
Born on 04-05-1903 in Eibergen
Died on 30-03-1945 in Zutphen
Johannes ten Barge was a farmer. During the war he helped the resistance by helping Jews and other persecuted people who were looking for shelter to go into hiding. He also helped Allied pilots.
On March 3, 1945, he was arrested and deported by the German occupiers. His wife was pregnant with their tenth child at the time. He was locked up in the House of Detention in Zutphen, together with his fellow citizen Herman ten Have.
On March 30, 1945, they were shot in the courtyard of the Detention Center on the orders of Untersturmführer Ludwig Heinemann ("the beast of Zutphen"). The reason was the order to evacuate the detention center.
The two men were recognized after the liberation of Zutphen on April 7, 1945, and their bodies were taken to Beltrum. Johannes ten Barge was buried at the cemetery in Beltrum on April 12, 1945.
