Paul Van de Berghe was the first victim of the Courcelles massacre but was not part of the nineteen civilians murdered by the Rexists in Courcelles on 18 August 1944.
The Courcelles massacre involved the execution of nineteen civilians by Rexists on the morning of 18 August 1944 in Courcelles, in revenge for the killing of the Rexist mayor of Charleroi by the Belgian resistance.
