Memorial General Władysław Anders

Władysław Anders (1892 – 1970) was a Polish general.
During the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Anders commanded a cavalry brigade. From September 17, 1939, the armies of the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland during the Soviet campaign against Poland. He was seriously injured in fighting with the Red Army and was taken prisoner of war by the Soviet Union. As a prisoner of war, he was first in Lemberg and later in the infamous Lubyanka prison of the NKVD in Moscow.

After the German attack on the Soviet Union, Anders was released in June 1941 and was appointed commander of the Polish army in the Soviet Union on August 4, 1941. Following an agreement between the Soviet Union and the Polish government in exile (and after considerable pressure from England), this Polish army was allowed to leave for the Western Front via Iran and the Middle East in July 1942.

Anders fought with the soldiers of the Polish 2nd Corps in the Battle of Monte Cassino. After the war, Anders did not return to Soviet-occupied Poland, but remained active in Great Britain for the Polish government in exile. After his death, Anders was buried at the Polish war cemetery at Monte Cassino.
