Ghetto Venezia

The Venice Ghetto is the Jewish quarter in the northern Cannaregio district. During the time of the Venetian Republic, which existed from the 9th to the end of the 18th century, it was established that Jews were allowed to live in that district. The Venetian Ghetto gave its name to other ghettos in the world.

The Holocaust memorial (1980) hangs on the wall of house number 2874. It consists of seven bronze bas-relief plates depicting scenes from the Holocaust, by sculptor Arbit Blatas. Further on, another memorial by the same artist, from 1993, on wooden planks the names of the 246 Jews deported from Venice. Only eight of them would return; They can be seen on a bronze panel on board the train carriages.
