The day Maria wasn't looking
The liberation of Asten-Ommel from September 21 to 23, 1944 became a tragedy. The Mariaoord was in the line of fire for several days and nights.
Many villagers had left home and hearth, but a number of Ommel families had stayed at home and had to go to the air raid shelters. This also applies to the Michels and Klaus families at Ommels Eindje. On the morning of September 21, the attack was so alarming that 20 men fled into the shared air-raid shelter between the farms.
They did not know that a grenade could also hit a tree and cause death and destruction in the shelter at the foot of that tree.
That morning, six Michels children and four Klaus children died in one fell swoop. The slightly injured mother Lied Michels also did not return from the hospital. She died of grief, all of Ommel knows.
