The Battle in the Shadow took place on the territory of the municipalities of Asten, Deurne, Nederweert and (then) Meijel. After the 7th US Armored Division had held out against German superior numbers, it was up to the 15th Scottish Division to work with the Americans to clear the countryside of German soldiers. Hundreds of soldiers - German and Allies - lost their lives in those battles. The Deurne church villages of Liessel and Neerkant - which were severely damaged during the final liberation - also suffered dozens of civilian casualties. In an accident involving exploding war equipment on the Rinkveld - near the hamlet of Leensel - fourteen people were killed in one fell swoop. In 1992, Liessel erected a dignified war memorial for all these war victims.
