This statue of Louis Mountbatten, the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma was erected shortly after his death as a result of an IRA bombing in 1979. Mountbatten commanded British troops in Asia during World War II and was India's last (British) viceroy until independence in 1948.
A plaque bearing the Star of Burma in honour of the Allied troops who fought in the Burma Campaign and the South East Asia Command during World War II was unveiled at the monument at the same time.
