Bunker CS 5 Fraiture

This is bunker CS 5 from sector Comblain-Sougné of the 1st line of defense of the city of Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège 1 (PFL 1).

This was the last sector of the PFL 1. This sector ran west into sector Sougné-Becco (SB). Sector CS consisted of 31 bunkers to the south and west of the once planned but never built Fort de Sougné-Remouchamps.

The bunker is located at the edge of a meadow near a large Horse Stable. It is a smaller bunker with one gun opening for a machine gun. Over the years, the bunker has been partially covered by soil so the access is partly below ground level. The bunker is still accessible but due to the nettles and thorny bushes it's difficult to access.

The owner of the land uses the bunker as a kind of storage so the bunker is surrounded by various agricultural equipment.

The walls and ceiling of the bunkers from the PFL line are 1.3 meters thick reinforced concrete. They could withstand shelling with 150mm shells.

When the bunkers lost their strategic value for the defense of Belgium after the war, the metal of the shutters and doors was sold as scrap metal. Also, most of the plots on which they stood were sold, so many bunkers are now on private plots.
