Bunker CS 15 Aywaille

This is bunker CS 15 from the sector Comblain-Sougné of the 1st line of defense of the city of Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège 1 (PFL 1).

This was the last sector of the PFL 1. This sector ran west into sector Sougné-Becco (SB). Sector CS consisted of 31 bunkers to the south and west of the once planned but never built Fortres of Sougné-Remouchamps.

Bunker CS 15 is only 150 m from bunker CS 14 on the Amblève River. Together, these bunkers guarded the river and the small town of Aywaille. This bunker, unlike bunker CS 14, was armed with a machine gun. The balustrade on top of the bunker was originally installed that way. It was for camouflage so that the bunker would look like a patio on the Amblève. The bunker is not accessable. Photo 4 shows the gunopening.

Photo 5 shows bunkers CS 14 and 15 from across the Amblève River.

Of the succeeding bunkers CS 16, 17, 18 and 19 were demolished after the war. The next surviving bunker in this sector is [towid149604, bunker CS 20[/towid].

The walls and ceiling of the bunkers from the PFL line are 1.3 meters thick of reinforced concrete. They could withstand shelling with 150mm shells.

The bunkers were built in the early 1930’s.

When after the war the bunkers lost their strategic value for the defense of Belgium, the metal of the hatches and doors was sold as scrap metal.
