House 'The Roman'
In 1940, 'De Romein' was requisitioned by the occupying forces to serve as a school location for the NSB. The presence of the framework school, such as the weekly marches through Deurne's center, caused a lot of annoyance among Deurne residents. On October 26, 1940, a group of at least 23 people decided to "teach the NSB members a lesson" by throwing stones in the direction of 'De Romein', destroying stained glass windows.
When Commander Prevo of the school went to ask Mayor Lambooij, he said that he had 'coincidentally' heard that irregularities had been expected in the Deurne center. As a result, he ordered the police to stay in the center, far from the cadre school.
With the exception of Theo van Hout, Jacobus Goossens, Jan Lutters and Driek Maas, who had to appear in court, 19 suspects were not prosecuted due to a lack of evidence. The 4 suspects were ultimately found guilty of destroying the windows and sentenced to fines of 40 guilders. Later the story went around that the fines had been paid by the resistance, in the person of Hub van Doorne.
