"The bridge over the Gete was the most vulnerable spot in the Belgian defence on 12 August 1914. It was defended by 120 to 150 carabineers-cyclists. They stopped the first Germans, but retreated afterwards. They blew up the bridge. 1.500 German riders rode into the narrow streets, where they came under fire from the Belgian guns."
