Memorial B17G-42-37737 Tennessee Toddy

This is a memorial to the crew of B17G-42-37737 Tennessee Toddy. An American bomber that got into trouble on October 10, 1943. Above Markelo, pilot 2nd Lt. E. Verrill ordered to leave the plane. Nine men bailed out. 2nd Lt. J Lilley was left hanging from the elevator with his parachute. He was seriously injured and died shortly after hitting the ground. The pilot made a successful emergency landing a few hundred meters north of the memorial. He, like seven other crew members, was taken prisoner of war. Only A.J. Horning (navigator) escaped and reached England in January 1944.
