On 29 June 1944, German troops attacked the villa on Sint-Jansberg in Zelem. The leaders of the Secret Army had sought refuge there after their escape from Hasselt prison. The villa was set on fire and only two resistance members were able to escape. Six resistance fighters were shot dead on the spot and the others were captured and taken to concentration camps.
A year after the facts, there was a solemn commemoration on Sunday 29 July 1945, on Sint-Jansberg with the inauguration of a chapel. The names of the killed resistance fighters are listed at the base of the chapel.
