Jewish Mass Grave Memorial Krāslava

In the beginning of the Nazi occupation of Krāslava, local self-defenders began arresting and shooting some Jews as early as June 29, 1941. Mass arrests began at the end of July, resulting in Krāslava's Jews (about 1,000 people) being placed in two synagogues and adjacent buildings. On July 26, 1941, the arrested Jews were taken to the Daugavpils ghetto; The weakest were shot along the way (about 40 people). In August, local self-defenders and police officers arrested several hundred more Jews from Krāslava. Some of them were taken to the Augustovka ravine (about 1 km from Krāslava) and some of them to the bank of the Daugava River near the turpentine factory and were shot there.

To commemorate the murdered next to the former turpentine factory, in 2008 the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia placed on the bank of the Daugava River a monument in red granite with the Star of David and an inscription in Latvian: "In July and August 1941 200 Jews of Krāslava murdered on the bank of the river."
