Memorial Canadian Scottish Regiment Deventer

A plaque commemorating the liberation of the city on 10 April 1945 by the 1st Battalion of the Canadian Scottish Regiment of the Canadian Army hangs in a courtyard of Deventer City Hall.

The Canadian Scottish Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Canadian Army, which originated on Vancouver Island. In the latter part of the war, this regiment entered the eastern side of Deventer from Epse, via Schalkhaar, in April 1945. Together with The Royal Winnipeg Rifles and the Regina Rifles Regiment, they made a major contribution to the liberation of the region.

The text on plaque unveiled on 4 May 2023 by 99-year-old veteran Nick Janicki reads:

"To commemorate all ranks
of 1st Battalion
Canadian Scottish Regiment
who gave their lives for freedom
and in gratitude
for the liberation of Deventer
on April 10, 1945".
