Bunker CS 9

This is bunker CS 9 from sector Comblain-Sougné of the 1st line of defense of the city of Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège 1 (PFL 1).

This was the last sector of the PFL 1. This sector ran west into sector Sougné-Becco (SB). Sector CS consisted of 31 bunkers to the south and west of the once planned but never built Fort de Sougné-Remouchamps.

The bunker is located in a forest plot on an embankment between the railroad and a campsite. The bunker is completely overgrown by ivy and bushes and is therefore completely hidden from view. Even from a distance of 1 meter, you wouldn't be able to find the bunker if you didn't know it was located here (see photo 5).

The bunker is still accessible but the nettles and thorny bushes make it difficult to approach. The artillery opening faces east and guarded both the road and the railroad. It is located only about 200 m from bunker CS 8 which guarded the entrance to the village of Martinrive and the railroad line. Both bunkers were equipped with a machine gun.

The walls and ceiling of the bunkers from the PFL line are 1.3 meters thick and made of reinforced concrete. They could withstand shelling with 150mm shells.

When the bunkers lost their strategic value for the defense of Belgium after the war, the metal of the hatches and doors was sold as scrap metal. Also, most of the plots on which they stood were sold, so many bunkers now stand on private plots.
