Alan Hardy Memorial Chilham

Lieutenant Allan Hardy, RFC, along with Captain FGA Arkwright, was accidentally killed on 14 October 1915 during a flight between Glamis and Forfar.
They were stationed at RFC Montrose in Forfarshire, Scotland in 1915.
On October 13, 1915, they were taking off from Montrose airfield when they landed at Glamis Castle due to an engine failure.

A new propeller was fitted and the next day the officers began the return flight to RFC Montrose. It soon became apparent that they were in trouble as they flew at an altitude of three to four hundred feet. The machine spun once or twice and then crashed to the ground with great force. The aircraft was destroyed and both officers were killed instantly.
Their bodies were recovered and military funerals took place in England at their home locations. Lieutenant Allan Hardy, aged 25, was the son of Colonel Hardy of Chilham Castle Kent.
