The resistance in Mierlo developed a plan to raid and destroy the population register. After the robbery, the Old Town Hall would be set on fire to seriously thwart the occupier.
On the evening of February 11, 1944, the guard posts were overpowered. It turned out that the safe door could not be forced. A hole in the side walls was supposed to provide the solution. Due to the noise, the robbers were noticed and had to leave in a hurry. Harrie van Gestel went last and set the place on fire. In all haste, windows and doors had not been opened and due to a lack of oxygen the fire went out on its own. The robbery was therefore a failure.
The Old Town Hall was preserved.
