This is the tunnel entrance to the former bunker Canal Sud, located against the Caestert massif in which Fort Eben-Emael was built.
This bunker had to defend the fort against attacks from the Albert Canal and the open flat side on the other side. The bunker consisted of two floors and had 2 gunopenings on the north and south side.
The bunker was demolished in later years due to intended work on the Albert Canal and the locks. However, the surroundings on the Albert Canal have not been changed. Probably the intended work did not go ahead, but the bunker was already demolished by then. What remains is the bricked-up tunnel entrance that connected to the fort's tunnel system.
On the north side toward the village of Kanne, a machine gun was placed on both ground and first floor.
On the south side towards the village of Lanaye, a 60 mm antitank gun was placed on the ground floor. On the first floor was a machine gun and a searchlight.
There was also an observation turret on top of the bunker. This turret was also equipped with a machine gun.
To the north the same type bunker; Canal Nord is located.
Old photos still show the bunker. These are pictures of the photos on display in the fort itself.
