In the small village of Boirs is a beautiful monument.
In itself, it looks like the monuments found all over Belgium. However, this monument has a special detail.
The lion on top of the monument has its paw on top of a German 'Pickelhaube' used in the 1st World War. This beautifully reflects Belgium's victory over the German invasion of 1914. Like the monument in Limbourg, this is one of the most symbolic.
It is therefore remarkable that this monument survived World War II. It is not unimaginable that the German occupiers would have taken offence at this. Considering this is a small village, where nothing was going on, and where only occasional German soldiers would pass trhough, the Germans will not have noticed.
