Belgian War Graves Romsée

The Romsée cemetery contains five graves of soldiers who died in World War I from Romsée.

Five soldiers are buried side by side in identical graves;

THONON Jean-Joseph, age 33, soldier, died by shrapnel at Boezinge (West Flanders) on August 27th, 1918. First buried in the cemetery of West-Vleteren. Reburied at Romsée on September 17th, 1921.

MATHIEU Fernand, age 31, Corporal in the Corps of Engineers, died of influenza and pneumonia (probably as a result of the epidemic Spanish influenza that struck hard even among soldiers) on November 3rd, 1918. First buried in Bruges, reburied in Romsée on September 7th, 1921.

TONKA Gilles, age 28, soldier in the 12th line regiment, killed in action at Oostkerke (West Flanders) on October 10th, 1915. First buried at Adinkerke, reburied at Romsée on May 12, 1921.

LALLEMAND Gregoire, age 25, private of the 18th line regiment, died in the hospital of Beveren-aan-den-Yzer (West Flanders) from wounds received from a bullet shot at Langemark on May 10th, 1918.

SAUR David, age 24, soldier, died June 29th, 1916 from a fatal accident in the pit coal mines at Spekholzerheide (Kerkrade) while working during his internment in the Netherlands. Reburied in Romsée on October 7th, 1923.

And a separate grave for

LECLUSE Julien, age 27, died February 28th, 1920. Very likely, as a result of injuries ore damaged lungs from gaspoisening, he died a year and a half later. On his grave is a plaque affixed on behalf of the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the 38th Battalion of the 3rd Artillery Regiment.
