War Memorial Alphonse Masson

This monument commemorates resistance member Alphonse Masson. He was a member of the A.S., Armée Secret.

He was executed by the Germans on this spot on Sept. 10th, 1944, at the age of 19(!).

On September 10th, many members of the Armée Secret were called upon to actively oppose the Germans, Since the Allied landing in Normandy, the German troops were on the losing side and were retreating further and further. The organized resistance, including the A.S. mobilized its resistance fighters, who until then had operated in secret, to actively fight the Germans and thus liberate Belgium from occupation. See also the operation of the A.S. at Fôrret.

Fate struck for Alphonse Masson. He was arrested and executed by the Germans.

Alphonse Masson is buried in the crypt of the memorial in the Pepinster General Cemetery. On this monument he is also commemorated (see photo 4) on the horizontal tablet.
