The British Wellington MK X HE752 AS-W bomber crashed at this site on 28 May 1943 at around 0.100am. The aircraft belonged to the 166th Squadron from Kirmington and was part of a fleet of 500 aircraft. It was en route to Essen in the Ruhr and was shot down during a dogfight over Twente.
The entire crew consisting of Donald Tonkinson, Percy Guest, Thomas Brown, Arthur Johnson and Norman Rayner were killed in the crash. They are buried at the General Cemetery in Hengelo (OV)
A memorial plaque commemorating this event was erected on 25-5-2024.
