From the summer of 1944, parts of rocket research were moved from the Peenemünde Heeresversuchsanstalt to here, the so-called WVA (Wasserbauversuchsanstalt GmbH Kochelsee), because the energy needed for a supersonic wind tunnel system could be taken directly from the power plant on the Walchensee lake.
As part of the demilitarisation process, this high-tech facility was dismantled by the US army in late 1945 and rebuilt in White Oak, Maryland, at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Along with the plant, researchers Rudolf Hermann, Hermann Heybey, Eber, Hermann Kurzweg and Ernst Winkler were brought to the US as part of Operation Paperclip.
