War Memorial Armée Secret

On Rue Bronromme near the village of Densié is a monument to the Armée Secret. the Secret Belgian army, A.S.

The monument commemorates fallen members of the secret army, including an American soldier Phil Cimino and the fallen resistance members of the "Le Chevreuil" group.

PIROTTE Roger, age unknown, brigadier with the A.S., killed in combat with the Germans on Sept. 10th, 1944.

BERTRAND Joseph, age 31, member of the A.S., executed October 6th, 1943 at the Citadelle of Liège on suspicion of espionage.

KEUTIENS Hubert, age 19 !, member of the A.S., convicted of carrying a weapon (in the streetcar from Spa to Verviers), executed September 17th, 1943 in the Citadelle of Liège .

CHEVOLET Leon, age unknown, member of the A.S., he is still missing, last known place of residence was in Germany.

TOUSSAINT Theophile, age unknown, member of the A.S., he is still missing, last known place of residence was in Bergen-Belsen, Germany.

BECKERS Pierre, age 43, member of the A.S., executed September 10th, 1944 at Winamplanche (La Reid) on suspicion of espionage. (father of Jean Beckers mentioned below)

BECKERS Jean, age 22, member of the A.S. executed on September 10th, 1944 at Winamplanche (La Reid) on suspicion of espionage. (son of Pierre Beckers mentioned above)

SHULTE Ernest, age unknown, Lieutenant in the A.S., died fighting with the Germans on Sept. 10th, 1944.

ANDRE Pierre, age 30, member of the Resistance and dropped at the "Le Chevreuil" drop zone near Bronromme, was transported to Buchenwald concentration camp in May 1944, died in Oraniënburg concentration camp, Germany.

FRANSSEN Marcel, age 46, member of the resistance and dropped at the drop zone "Le Chevreuil" near Bronromme, was transported to Buchenwald concentration camp in May 1944, died in a concentration camp but unknown where.

RENSON Paul, age unknown, member of the resistance and dropped at the drop zone "Le Chevreuil" near Bronromme, was transported in May 1944, died in concentration camp Flossenberg, Germany.

SAELENS Richard, age unknown, id of the resistance and dropped at the drop zone "Le Chevreuil" near Bronromme, also soldier in the 1st regiment Lanciers, died in a concentration camp but unknown where.

SCHERNER Julien, 40, member of the resistance and dropped at the drop zone "Le Chevreuil" near Bronromme, was transported to Buchenwald concentration camp in May 1944, died in a concentration camp but unknown where.

CIMINO Phil, age 21, Technical Sergeant. Killed by the Germans on Sept. 10th, 1944.

He was a member of the crew of a B-17 bomber that had to make an emergency landing in the Northeast Polder on July 7th, 1944. Through smuggling routes, he was taken south to rejoin the Americans, who had been advancing further and further north since D-Day June 6th, 1944. At some point he made it to Belgium and decided to join the A.S. There he was killed during fighting with the Germans on Sept. 10th, 1944. Phil Cimino was reburied in America after the war.
