The Appleby and Brown families lived as neighbours in Cogbury Cottages which are virtually opposite st Peter's church. Arthur Appleby was married to Fred Brown's sister, Letitia, who between April and October 1917 lost her husband, her brother and her brother in law whilst only being 30 years old. William and Fred had grown up together, sang in the church choir and worked on the same farm, their homes being 'tied' cottages to Lower Farm in Podimore. They had joined up around the same time and their deaths were reported in the same issue of the local paper with accompanying photographs and a combined Memorial service in the church.
