Slotbos Haamstede was the nerve centre of the Atlantikwall on Schouwen-Duiveland during World War II. The complex of around 40 bunkers known as Stützpunkt Schouwen housed an entire infantry battalion.
Dozens of these bunkers can still be found in this forest belonging to Slot Haamstede. Built in 1942, they are mainly of types Rb 501 and Rb 502 (personnel bunkers) and Rb 134 (ammunition bunkers). There are also a kitchen and canteen bunker, an aggregate bunker a small token bunker.
Just outside the enclosed Slotbos are still the large command bunker Rb 117a (known as the Whale bunker) and the hospital bunker Rb 118a.
The Slotbos is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is not open to the public. In summer, however, there are a number of guided tours where, besides the there nature, ample attention is paid to the history of the bunkers, some of which are also visited.
