On 5 May 1943 at 0.2.09, Halifax W7817 the RCAF 419 Squadron crashed at this spot. The aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter. Flight Sgt Frederick Thomas Stanley was killed in the crash and the remaining six crew members were taken prisoner.
The Halifax had taken off on Tuesday 4 May 1943, at 11.01pm, from RAF Middleton St George base, County of Durham in England. It was flying 596 aircraft that night for an attack on Dortmund. 42 aircraft did not return to their base. Of the RCAF 419 Squadron, 18 aircraft left, two were lost, including this Halifax! Of this Squadron, eight men were killed that night and six were captured.
