Air Ventilation System Fort Eben-Emael

The recess in the middle of the Caestert massif is the main ventilation system for the fortress of Eben-Emael. There were four such ventilation systems for the fort.

The ventilation system is even protected by its own bunker, also just visible in the photos. Now the ventilation system was already in a hard-to-reach place, but with a few targeted air strikes it was not impossible to damage it.

This ventilation system was located in this difficult-to-attack spot and had to provide the fort with fresh air when, due to a gas attack, it was not possible to get air in other ways. The air could even be filtered with activated charcoal through two separate rooms.

If this filtering system did not work, the soldiers could only stay in the fort and perform their duties with a gas mask on. It was therefore essential that the ventilation could remain in operation.
