Memorial Sir George Dowty

This monument commemorates Sir George Dowty (1901-1975).

He was the engineer who designed the innovative hydraulic and pneumatic undercarriage (Boulton & Paul) of the Lancaster bombers. The Avro Lancaster is a four-engine heavy bomber with the distinctive double tail fins that entered service with the RAF in 1942. This undercarriage made the bomber stable on the runway under all conditions and heavy bomb loads.

Sir George Dowty was knighted in 1967 for his years of outstanding work for the aviation industry.

The Avro Lancasters were also used in the airlift for West Berlin in 1948-1949. And even then, the undercarriage designed by Sir George Dowty proved its worth.

For that reason, Sir Dowty stands at this monument next to the landing gear he designed.

The bomb next to the monument is a replica of the bomb that came down on this spot, the driveway to the house, during the Battle of Britain.
