Battery Wagner

Battery Wagner was a part of the defences of the southern port of Charleston, defending the southern approaches, built on Morris Island on a strip of beach between and impassable swamp and the Atlantic Ocean.
There were two battles of Battery (or Fort) Wagner in July 1863, the 2nd being more popularly known as it involved the assault of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry under Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The 54th were one of the first black units in the Northern Army and suffered heavy casualties including its commanding officer. The story is told in the film 'Glory'.
The battery was subjected to erosion and by 1885 it was reported that the fort had been washed into the see. A lighthouse has been built adjacent to the former site.
