Soldier's Ground - Confederate Burial Site

Within Magnolia Cemetery (named after the plantation Magnolia Umbra on which it stands) lies a Confederate Burial ground. Magnolia Cemetery is on The National Register of Historic Places.

This site was the principal burial site for Confederate forces who died in the Charleston area. Whilst some are were killed or mortally wounded in conflict, most are as a result of diseases such as malaria, smallpox. yellow fever and measles. 644 were buried here during the war and with re-interments from Gettysburg (1999) and beneath the Citadel stadium (2005) the total is now 772.
Over 1500 other Confederate veterans, including wartime casualties, are buried in private lots throughout the cemetery.
